Remarks: S-100 Protein is present in astrocytes and glial cells in the brain and also in melanocytes. It is used in monitoring patients with malignant melanoma. A value greater than 0.2 µg/L is indicative of advanced disease (Stages III and IV) with a Positive Predictive Value of approximately 90%. Serum S-100 concentration is related to tumour burden and gives an early indication of successful response to chemotherapy.
