Rubella virus
Sample: Serum 0.5 mL
Status: Accredited
Schedule: Daily (Immunofluorescence)
Units: IgG in IU/mL IgM: positive or negative
Range: More than 15 IU/mL for IgG indicates past infection. Positive IgM indicates possible current infection.
Remarks: Rubella (German measles) can cause serious defects in the embryo. About 25 percent of newborns whose mothers get rubella virus in the first trimester of pregnancy are born with one or more birth defects: eye defects, hearing loss, heart defects, mental retardation and, less frequently, movement disorders.
