Remarks: Mumps disease (Parotitis) is an acute viral illness. Mumps virus is a paramyxovirus in the same group as parainfluenza virus. Parainfluenza disease virus produce antibodies that cross-react with mumps virus. The mumps virus is acquired by respiratory droplets, it replicates in the nasopharynx and lymph nodes. After 12-25 days a viremia occurs which lasts from 3-5 days. During the viremia, the virus spreads to multiple tissues (meninges, salivary lands , pancreas, testes, and ovaries. Inflammation in infected tissues leads to characteristic symptoms of parotitis and aseptic meningitis.
