Immunofixation Electrophoresis (IFE)
Sample: Serum, CSF, Urine
Schedule: One week
Units:
Range: Negative
Remarks: Immunofixation Electrophoresis (IFE) combines zone electrophoresis with immunoprecipitation and is used to identify and characterise serum proteins. Immunofixation is more sensitive than immunoelectrophoresis in detecting a monoclonal protein in the urine, especially in recognizing a monoclonal heavy chain fragment in the urine with myeloma or amyloidosis. The detection of Bence Jones proteins in urine is of considerable importance in the diagnosis of immunocytoma.
