Remarks: IgM is the first immunoglobulin produced in newborns and is used mainly to evaluate the acute phase of infections. IgM immunoglobulins, unlike IgG, do not cross the placenta, so the presence of specific IgM antibodies in the serum of newborns is used to demostrate the infection of the child, in the presence of passively adquired IgG antibodies from the mother. IgM deficiency is associated mainly with gram negative infections.
