Remarks: HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) is the earliest indicator of the presence of acute infection with the Australian antigen (Hepatitis B) as well as the indicator of chronic infection. Patients who are HBsAg(-) may still have acute type B viral hepatitis if anti HBs are still (-) i.e. the patient has not yet developed the antibody (anti-HBs). In this case, both tests anti-HBc IgG and IgM are ( ) whereas anti-HBc IgM( ) is the only indicator of an acute stage of the infection with hepatitis B.
