Range: A positive result indicates past infection Remarks E. histolytica infects humans and primates, is transmited by cysts (the environmental survival form of the parasite) from feces of dogs and cats. Cysts survive outside the host in water and soils and on foods, especially under moist conditions on the latter. The disease caused by E. histolytica is called amoebiasis, an infection with any of various amoebae. It is an asymptomatic carrier state in most individuals, but diseases ranging from chronic, mild diarrhea to fulminant dysentery may occur.
